Life Transitions

Transition: The psychological process of adapting to change

“I’m not growing in this relationship. I’m being destroyed. But I don’t know if I’m ready to get out.”

“I don’t know who I am anymore.”

“I’m thankful for what I have, but isn’t there something more to life?”

Often, people seek therapy when experiencing a critical moment in their lives:

… the beginning of the end of a relationship or marriage.

… the shift from your parent’s home to living independently.

… the search for meaning in mid-life.

… the struggle to cope with death and illness.

… the sense of entrapment – knowing a job or career is dissatisfying but not feeling ready to do something about it.

How we meet ourselves in these critical moments determines the outcome for years to come.

Understand loss. Deal with resistance. Develop new beginnings.

Change and transition are different.

Change is a life event that you experience, whereas a transition is the psychological process of adapting to that change.

That adaptation process has three stages:

An ending of what came before where we learn about how to cope with loss

A transition time in which we sort through resistance to the change process

A new beginning when we learn to explore options about how to the change influences on who we are and who we want to become.

How I Help

Starting where you are, together we develop strategies that feel comfortable (but might also push you if you are ready for greater change) to broaden your perspective on how to learn from and grow through the transitional experience.

Enhance your journey – let me guide you.

Starting therapy during any part of the transition process is an important part of inner growth.

It can be complicated, but it’s worth it – and you don’t have to go it alone.

I’ve had 20 years’ experience guiding others through the change process by working with initial denial, reservation, ambivalence, frustration, leading to understanding, growth, relief and contentedness.
